Sharepoint 2016
This is the latest on-prem version where all hardware is kept within the walls of your organization, and the platform is managed by your own operations team. You may want this option if:
- You have the data centers, hardware, software, and supporting staff
- You want highly customized solutions that may not be supported in SharePoint Online
- You have security needs or other organizational policies that don’t permit Cloud services
- You do not need to collaborate outside of your organization
- You do not need mobile access to SharePoint
SharePoint Online & Office 365
Microsoft owns and manages the platform, including data centers, storage, and other hardware needs. Office 365 offers a variety of modern office applications, of which SharePoint Online is only one of many. This platform will be owned and managed by Microsoft, and you are only responsible for licensing, access, data management. You may want this option if:
- You want to be able to collaborate outside of your organization
- You do not have customizations that aren’t supported by SharePoint Online
- You want mobile access to SharePoint
- You do not have or no longer want to support your own data centers and hardware
- You want to standardize a wide variety of workplace applications in the Cloud
Hybrid Model
A SharePoint Hybrid Model uses an Office 365 as well as an on-prem, connected through a trust or sync service so that credentials and search options are integrated. You may want this option if:
- You require the ability to collaborate outside of your organization or have mobile access
- You have security needs or organizational policies that require part of your content to remain on prem
- You have customizations that are not supported in SharePoint Online
